In this story
It was meant to be a quick stop at an Umbrian farm: stretch our legs, drink some water and take one photograph with the horse before continuing.
The horse stood quietly, watching us with an expression of complete innocence. That was the first warning we ignored.
The Perfect Photograph
One of us stood beside him and adjusted her hat while another raised the camera. A paper map remained in her hand because, seconds earlier, she had been checking our next stop.
“One, two…”
Before “three,” the horse reached forward and caught the corner of the map between his teeth.
At first, we thought he was playing. Then he began to chew.
Negotiations for an Apple
We gathered around, trying to recover the map without tearing it further. One person called his name, another offered a piece of bread, and the farm owner watched the entire scene with growing amusement.
Then someone produced an apple.
The horse released the map immediately, as if he had known all along that the negotiations simply needed a better offer.
We recovered it with one corner missing and a little more moisture than any map should have, but the main road was still visible.
The owner inspected the damage and said:
Clearly, he didn’t approve of your route.
The Map We Kept
Opening a map on a phone would have been easier. Still, we folded the paper carefully and kept it.
It became a better souvenir than anything we could have bought: roads, a small mark of Umbrian soil, and the unmistakable bite of a horse who had decided to join the planning.
Travel photographs do not always happen as arranged. Very often, the moment that ruins the picture is the one we remember.
