The table was ready in the garden: bread, salad, simple dishes and iron chairs facing the Umbrian valley. The sun was out, the yellow roses were open, and nobody had a reason to question the weather.
We sat down, the first course arrived, and we agreed that this was exactly what an Italian spring should look like.
Two minutes later, the first drop fell.
Everyone Saves Something
No discussion was needed. One person lifted the plates, another grabbed both ends of the tablecloth, and a third ran with the water jug. Our host opened the farmhouse door and directed traffic like the head of an emergency operation.
Within seconds, a calm lunch became a ridiculous race across wet grass.
The plates arrived. The glasses arrived. The salad arrived.
The bread basket remained alone on the table.
We stood in the doorway watching it under the rain, each person convinced that somebody else had been responsible for it.
The Final Rescue
One of us ran back, raised the basket above his head and returned in triumph. Unfortunately, its cloth cover escaped halfway and landed in a rose bush.
Our host laughed.
Spring decides where we eat here.
We moved everything into a small room warmed by the fire. The chairs did not match, we sat closer together, and the table barely held all the dishes. It was better than the perfect arrangement outside.
After the Rain
By the end of lunch, the shower had passed and a faint rainbow appeared over the valley. We walked outside to see it, carrying the rescued bread basket as if it were another member of the group.
The beautiful picture had been waiting in the garden. The real memory happened during the dash between the table and the door.
That may be one of Umbria’s quiet talents: when the weather changes, the day is not ruined. The story simply moves somewhere else.
