Travelers debating near Palermo Cathedral as a hand reaches for the last arancina

    The Last Arancina in Palermo

We became absorbed in a debate over the name of Palermo’s famous rice ball. While we argued, the last one disappeared.

We were standing near Palermo Cathedral, with strong sunshine and even stronger hunger. We bought a tray of hot arancine and agreed to divide them fairly.

That was the plan before the debate began.

    Arancina or Arancino?

One of us said “arancino.” Another corrected him immediately: “In Palermo, it’s arancina.”

A third person decided to ask the vendor. Her quick answer, delivered in a lively local accent, somehow added more confusion than clarity. Within a minute, we had two teams defending the name as if the matter carried enormous historical consequences.

The tray remained between us with one rice ball left.

    The Fourth Party

While we were busy gesturing, explaining and attempting the correct pronunciation, a quiet hand entered from outside the debate, took the last arancina and disappeared.

    Everyone stopped.

The owner of the hand stood beside us, eating comfortably. He shrugged and said:

You chose the name. I chose the food.

    Even the vendor laughed.

    The Final Decision

We bought another round. This time, everyone secured a portion before speaking. We ate in front of the cathedral while Palermo continued around us as if nothing had happened.

We never reached a final agreement about the name. We did agree on something more useful: in a food debate, the quiet person is often the smartest.

Since then, whenever one piece remains on a plate, all cultural questions are postponed until after it has been eaten.
