We had plenty of time to reach the ferry—or so we believed. We were walking beside Lake Garda with the mountains ahead and the pier almost in sight when the path divided. Rather than risk the wrong turn, we asked for help.
An elegant older Italian woman was passing with a small handbag. We asked, “Which way to the pier?”
She pointed. Then the story began.
Directions with Three Detours
We were to walk toward the fountain, but first we had to notice a bakery whose smell, she warned, might distract us. After the bakery, we should turn beside a house where an old schoolteacher once lived. Then she paused to explain how the street had changed since she was a child.
Every few seconds, we looked at the time and then back at her. Interrupting felt impossible. She was not simply giving directions; she was handing us the town itself.
A low engine sounded behind us.
We turned just in time to see our ferry pulling away from the pier.
The Next Ferry Is Prettier
We expected surprise, perhaps even an apology. Instead, she watched the boat leave and said calmly:
Don’t worry. The next ferry is prettier. The sun is softer.
We never discovered whether this was genuine local knowledge or an elegant Italian way of rescuing the moment. We chose to believe her.
While we waited, we found coffee and wandered through the garden she had been trying to describe. By the time the next ferry arrived, the light really was softer and the lake had settled into a quieter blue.
Not Every Delay Is a Loss
We reached our next stop later than planned, but with a story we would not have had otherwise.
Since then, we have learned that asking a local for directions may give you more than a street. Sometimes it gives you an unplanned hour that becomes the best part of the day.
